Drilling for Oil in the ANSW
I do not think oil drilling in Alaska’s Artic National Wildlife Refuge or the ANWR, should be permitted. The oil fields being drilled are located in a wildlife refuge, where animals are supposed to be protected. When a 1.5 million acre section of the ANWR is brought into an oil field, it is obvious that a large number of the wildlife in the area will be affected. “Today there are perhaps 270,000 caribou in Alaska. In 1935, biologist Olaus, Murie estimated the caribou population at between one and two million.” (Davis) I believe the caribou’s extreme decreased population has something to do with the drilling for oil in the area. Section 1002 is where these animals breed and raise their calves. Section 1002 needs to pull back out of the ANWR. Oil prices, and gas prices do not need to go down, more and more of my friends are beginning to carpool to school and work, together. It’s better for the environment if the gas prices stay the same or rise even. We should leave the oil drilling alone until we need it in the future.
William Baxter said “My criteria are oriented to people, not penguins. Damage to penguins, or sugar pines, or geological marvel is, without more, simply irrelevant.” (Baxter, 275) Clearly Baxter doesn’t care about wildlife he only cares about his own species. Baxter would allow drilling for oil in the wildlife refuge because it would benefit himself, and other people. Aldo Leopold however I believe does not agree “Of the 22,000 higher plants and animals native to Wisconsin, it is doubtful more than five percent can be sold, fed, eaten or otherwise put to economic use. Yet the creatures are members of the biotic community, and if (as I believe) its stability depends on its integrity, they are entitled to continuance.” (Leopold, 102) He believes
