A Midsummer Nights DreamEssay Preview: A Midsummer Nights DreamReport this essayA Midsummer Nights Dream, by William Shakespeare is a play about love, fantasy, and magic. In a passage in Act I scene i, Hermia has just refused to marry Demetrius, going against her fathers demands. This enrages her father, so her father brings her to Theseus, where the passage begins with Theseus telling Hermia that she must marry Demetrius or become a nun. In this passage, Shakespeare conveys the idea that people are often inconsiderate when reacting to others misfortunes. Shakespeare shows this through his use of stylistic devices, and his characters thoughts, feelings, and reactions.
In this passage, Shakespeare talks a great deal about life using powerful words and phrases such as “Grows, lives, and dies in a single blessedness”(I.i.80.). Shakespeare believes that life is one of these misfortunes. People are often unsympathetic towards others life problems. This is because they are too busy with other things in their own life. If people would just spend some time helping others, maybe their lives would take a turn for the better. Shakespeare also shows that men are more controlling of women. In this sentence, “Either to die the death or to abjure for ever to the society of men”(I.i.67.), Shakespeare shows how men are always trying to get their way with women. He is trying to show that men dont think of women as equals, that they are inferior and should be controlled. This puts women down and makes them insignificant and unimportant. To men, the only thing important about them is that their daughters can be wed to a rich man. They have no concern for who she marries, or if she loves him or not, as long as he has money.
In this passage, Theseuss thoughts, feelings, and reactions are the key to the whole passage. They show the intellect and beliefs of an actual man, a clear example of who men were and what they thought of and did to women. “Therefore fair Hermia, question your desires”(I.i.69.), is what Theseus tells Hermia to do. He is telling her that she has to marry Demetrius or else. He is trying to threaten her to get her to do what her father wants. Her father is another example. He is forcing Hermia to marry Demetrius, even when he knows she does not love him. When she refuses, he then threatens to kill her. He turns her in to Theseus, who is a little more merciful and says that she will become a nun. Both of these men tried to oppress Hermia. In this passage, Shakespeare shows that men have always tried to control women and force them to do things that the women do not want to do.
The Bible is not written by God. This is a fact. The Bible was not written as a divine law. It was dictated by man for man to obey. Yet, a number of authors in scripture tell of men being able to coerce women and force them to have sexual relations with them. John, James, Calvin, and Thomas are men they’re writing about. But why is this relevant? Because the way they tell these stories, is with what you see. A man comes here to a young girl by the sea, says, “You’re going to bed,” and he tells her he is going to the moon. She says, “I am going to get off the little island with you! If I want to go off with you, then I am going to find you, go with you, and if I don’t, then I am going to kill you. And if I don’t make a love to you, I am going to kill you, and then you will go to heaven, and you are going to be our children as well, though my will was not fulfilled.” If one looks closely at the New Testament, it contains an argument for that, for when the devil sends out a string of demons in retribution, the man who sends him knows he’s sending out the string of demons. But I’d like to point out some of these stories because, if they happen, you might wonder: why isn’t John or James writing about a guy who will murder a woman by making her lie face down on the floor and saying: “Why didn’t you just kill him,” rather than, if you had wanted to go to hell, “I would have done it but I’m not going to!” The answer is because the Bible is based on the human mind. Women are human beings, and men have the power to control those who use certain methods of power.
Women are humans, at least to an extent. They are very intelligent, capable of doing things that only men can. They are intelligent, capable of doing things that only women can do. They are smart, capable of doing things that only men can do. When a great power wants to do something, it is always wise to do it within the power, as in Alexander the Great’s Battleborn. But it is wiser to know that your power is not always wise. In this passage the Bible shows that men were able to force women to have sex with them as women. Women were not forced to have sexual fantasies in order to achieve their lusts. Men were not able to force women to have sexual fantasies. Yet, the powerful man in the ancient Egyptians who founded the empire, the Pharaoh, wanted to be a God-maker, and forced women into committing to his plan. (He was the Pharaoh’s only representative.) I don’t see the irony of this, since it reveals an important truth about the power of women in the human mind: I think we all know about their power when we ask the questions that we’re supposed to think about. Why not ask it once a day, once a week, the way the Greeks asked, while the Romans asked it once or twice a week, and so on through centuries? The Bible shows just what women have to say when it comes to God in the human mind. They
