Support Question
I believe that Willys inability to get past Yonkers has to do with all the stress hes going through due to his 34 year old son coming back home unemployed.
What Biff and Happy are really arguing about up in their room is the fact that Willy keeps on talking, yelling, and daydreaming
The reason why Biff came back home was because he had just recently got out of jail and had no place else to go.
Willy tells Howard he is going to buy a tape recorder because he was fascinated with the one Howard got and didnt want him to think he couldnt afford it. He also wanted to impress Howard.
Willy gets so angry with Howard because Howard refused to let Willy work in New York. Willy knew Howards father therefore felt betrayed.
Willy felt like he was becoming like his idol David Singlemann. Therefore, bringing up David Singlemann to Howard was just another way to convince Howard to let him work in New York
Biff gets angry with Bernard because when Bernard asked him why Biff gave up on school, Willy reacted in the wrong way, he figured Bernard was blaming and accusing him of his sons lack of commitment and motivation towards school. Also, the fact that Bernard is now successful angers him because it is not what Willy expected. Willy expected his sons to be more successful because they were well liked.
Willy refuses Charleys job offer because he feels that Charleys is only offering that job because he feels pity for Willy. Also, another reason could be because Willy doesnt want to let Charley know that he got fired from his previous job.
The basis of the disagreement is that Willy thinks that the insurance company will pay of his death and will provide $20 000 to his family which will help out more because he thinks that he is of no use alive and that him being death will make things better for his wife and sons. Charley completely disagrees.
Biff steals because from a young age, Biff was not taught the difference between right and wrong. He was taught that it was okay to steal as long as success comes from the stealing. Biff also feels as though the world owes him something, so when the people around him do not give him what hes owed, he steals from them to punish them.
Biffs effort to tell Willy about what happened with Oliver trigger Willys memories of learning that Biff failed math because Willy remembered that throughout is life he was not able to take responsibility as a father of his sons character development which made him realise that he should have been around his son more often and be a good father figure.
