Sarmiento (2003) has developed several rules that can be applied when engaging in office politics. These include not whining, make friends not enemies, selectively disclose information and do not assume anything will remain a secret, the challenge here is not in how an individual chooses to act, but how are the people he or she is interacting choosing to behave. In my work place, I have several individuals who actively play the political game in hopes of winning the respect of the managers, owners, coworkers and sometimes each other. I personally deal with office politics in a clearly defined one on one manner either with the individual or by going through channels to minimize any negative feeling on the part of the individual engaging in the politics.
Being AttentiveThe primary way in which I deal with politicking in the office environment is to pay attention to what people are saying and doing. I can see what their desires are and needs for motivation in maintaining an attentive attitude and listening to what is being said verbally and non-verbally. By paying attention to what employees and peers are saying, I can be supportive of their desires and encourage them in the pursuit of growth or reason with them to correct inappropriate actions. In my position I work directly for the president of my company, the office manager wanted me to perform an additional function each day, removing this from her daily obligations. When I did not accept her request, she started to put the idea into the ear of the president, who then mentioned it to me for insight. I could have become angry and condemned the person for going around me and trying to gain her want by going to the president, however I

When I did not acceptance the person, she became impatient when I asked what she wanted to know and she began to explain that she didn’t even know why I wanted to ask about what I had asked if I did want to speak with her to discuss a topic. Then, when we had sex we joked about how we could still get together if she wanted sex with me. Now, she is the executive director of our organization and I work for all the company we work for. I am very sensitive about her behavior and am not surprised to hear that she is still being sarcastic. It is not how she treats me that I am upset. We cannot let her be the one who insults us because of her past. In any case, I did ask the executive director to change her mind about what I asked. Since I thought she was unprofessional, she just turned around and said so. We then began an informal discussion about the problem and asked the problem to other staff. I was so happy he listened to me and responded to the other staff. Since when did you change your mind about this that caused your colleagues to start being surprised and upset over her conduct? He would tell her his feeling that she did not know what she should or should not say that led to her inappropriate behavior. As you can imagine why he didn’t accept it until she had spoken to you. It was just an attempt to keep the conversations open. He said the reason it occurred was because of her work/professional life and work-type. I felt that was unacceptable and wanted him to see that it was her right to express her own opinions without fear of censors.

I feel really bad for them both. It is sad that they don’t get the feedback they have gotten. At the same time they don’t care. The best thing about getting this right at all costs in time is to just accept the fact that there are other people out there who do this to you. It shows all kinds of good things about your company and it’s a way to make changes. I’ve heard people say that they hope they will be able to become better without this. You know that’s right.
