Nonetheless, this type of ceremony is often not an optimal solution to get rid of inappropriate behaviors.
From what I have learned in the course, the rite of degradation is actually a beneficial ritual which is important in shaping an organization culture. It is believed that many conflicts and confusions would arise without degradation. Only by publicly discrediting the official pertains to an individualЎ¦s misbehaviors can conflicts be reduced to the minimal. This is especially if the no-longer-desired leader retains influence, many problems would occur. The employees would be confused about who is really in authority and whom they should report to. Also, the removed official might thereby be able to have a chance to steal confidential information and sell to other organization. The employees will obey to orders due to their lack of knowledge of the leaderЎ¦s loss of power. Hence as has been shown, the rite of degradation would be essential in the management process. Nevertheless, even if this is true, I do not believe that it would be appropriate for management to use the rite of degradation as a means to control. I believe that it would in fact lead to more problems.
I have personally experienced the rite of degradation and really think that it can be destructive for organizations. My story goes like this. During the time I was working for an accounting firm (KPMG) the first impression I had with the working environment is that it is great. Every one is very cooperative and willing to help out when someone is in trouble. Even after we got off work, we would occasionally go to the pub and have a few drinks. I guess this is because we all share the same values and culture so everyone really enjoyed working with each other. However, after the day that our department head made an erroneous decision and got fired, the whole situation changes. Then, everyone became so worrisome and tense as we observed that our manager has been repeatedly degraded by the top managementЎҐs reference to difficulties in his private life and attribution to various problems. Now the office has never been as relaxed and warm as
I have personally witnessed the rite of degradation and really think that it can be destructive for organizations. My story goes like this. I am a member of a group with no specific idea or background. I don’t know a single one who would be able to fully accept this as a fact about myself and all my organization. But I have come to the conclusion that it is the truth and that if I am truly worthy of being fired, I would like to be treated like one. When you try to justify something and claim on your own that your boss is bad people or you don’t fit the mold of someone who is in a hard place, then there is no point in having fun and talking with your boss about it. People just become so much more friendly, caring, and professional than I am. I did not realize that just because I am a member, that I could possibly be the best supervisor in the building.
As the general attitude toward the management of employees is to not bother working, it is not surprising that I found myself in a very difficult situation. I have come to realize that I would still rather work in these offices if they were as well organized as the others. That is why it seems that so many people are looking elsewhere when they want to work in many other offices, such as the accounting firm. The fact that we got so very nice jobs from the people that started it also means that it is now possible to become rich as a director.
I believe that the way to solve human problems is to have a team that is the product of the efforts of its members and the people that work with it.
You can do that if you don’t want people to think that you are a bad person because you are human and you would have no real self-esteem.
If you want to create a project that people care about, be the one creating it. If you want to succeed, have others at the other end of the organizational committee who will be responsible for all your actions.
People should learn how to manage relationships and how to make your relationships work. As a group, they should be more involved if you want to succeed and to learn from them. The best thing to do is for them to learn and become better people and not be afraid because it is important that they become good people.
And the most important thing is to be open, accepting that you are working for this organization, as a member and not like a jerk.
This brings an end to the worst of situations and I hope that others will understand that this has been achieved and that as long as you have faith in yourself as a person, others will do the same too.
