If it is homework, class, family, friends, or just living life, all college students have something going to do. College students are stressed at some point in time and every college student can make college less stressful if they plan, set goals, and find something that they like about college. Dr. Drew (2007) put it in a good way when he said Ă²ĂâĂĹĄWithout stress, there would be no lifeĂ²ĂâĂĹ. Is that true? Would life be the same without stress? Every college student learns to deal with stress in a different way; some sleep, others eat. College students all have their own ways of dealing with stress. I believe that if we just follow these few simple steps it will make college less stressful.
Planning is a huge part of making college less stressful. When I first started in college I trusted my teacherĂ²Ăââ˘s syllabus to plan for me. I found out very quickly that it was making it a lot harder to keep track of everything I had complete. That is when I started to find out that if I planned things out every day and I would be able to get everything done that I needed. One of the biggest parts of planning is planning your time on an everyday basis. There are only so many hours in each day. All students have homework and assignments that have to be done. Sometimes we may forget about them that is when we stay up late to get them done. When doing it last minute, that makes that project so much more stressful and can make going to that class the next day stressful to. There is an easy solution to this problem. Write down when your assignments are due and then write down the time you are able to work on it. When you do this, you are planning to have set times to do all you homework and so you will never have to worry about when you are going to get it done. I started planning my time a couple of years ago and it made school work much less stressful for me. I know on an every day basis when I am going to work on school work, and I know that I am going to be able to get it done on time. Most college students fill their time with other activities like friends and family. Not only do you need to plan on when youĂ²Ăââ˘re going to do home work, but plan when you are going to hang out with friends. If you know when you have to do home work, then you are able to get things done so much more affectively. Kansas University (2007) stated that, Ă²ĂâĂĹĄyou must learn how to overcome procrastinationĂ²ĂâĂĹ. Every college student put things off till the last minuet. Why do we do that? Well itĂ²Ăââ˘s simple, we donĂ²Ăââ˘t like doing homework. I found that I was getting things done a lot easier when I planned on doing it and learned to set small goals.
Setting small goals can make big projects seem so much easier and a lot less stressful. I interviewed a college student that goes to Oakland Community College. She stated that with out setting goals she would never be able to get her homeowork done. I set small goals in everything that I do, not just in school. Some times we look at the big picture and that overwhelms us. We get stressed out when all we see is what has to be done in the end. Instead of looking at the big picture, we need to look at accomplishing small tasks to make up the big one. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I finish something that I have worked hard on. If I have to do something that is really going to be a hard project, I break it down and work on one little thing at a time so I feel like I am getting it done. When we set goals that are too much for us to handle, it could create more stress than not setting that goal at all. DonĂ²Ăââ˘t make goals big, make them obtainable. If you
are a project developer, you never want to make big projects, you just want to make a small one. Do that with your personal workflow. It should also be considered the foundation of a project. If you choose to do things that are hard if you want to make something that is easy, even if it doesn’t have much in common with the goal, you may make them different or less difficult too. When deciding on goals you have a hard time deciding what the best way to do it. This is true because you are only concerned about the goals. No one needs to really feel great about what is good or amazing or that you can be anything you want to be. We have the task of doing something that is different this time! What is good for me is good for all those who work on it to go to work and I am happy that I want to be able to work on it. So, to make small projects better, put a small goal in. I will never get out of a small task when I am at home. You will be happy with the results. If you are planning something, make it easier by having it done right away. This is just an example I can give you.
So, how many times are you going to start somewhere, and that can happen easily during the day or even after you set this small goal? What are some things that can be accomplished in less than 10 minutes if you do what all the little tasks get done that way? For a goal to be sustainable, you need to use good scheduling. When you set up your schedule you should always schedule your day on whatever time has a good mix of people working at this time. It can be an hour or so; a few hours with only two people working; 5-10 with 8-10 more people working each day. This is what makes large projects much more productive.
Also, when I had a small task that required a lot of time to complete, I would never spend a whole day on it. It took me a lot of planning. Don’t get me wrong, no one makes small projects that way, but if you are creating or learning a new language or a new job with no time to do it, or learning all the different languages, that is an example where you need to put yourself in the best position possible to put all that time on it. Make sure that you have a budget so you can pay your bills on time. DonĂ²Ăââ˘t waste time in having other people write drafts of your plan or get suggestions for other tasks. I have two friends who have their own projects, my family, and I have to set deadlines for each. On a day like this in my new time, I might not have needed to spend 30-40 minutes talking to my family. Then on a larger task like that, like this, there is no time for me to even think about writing a short article or reading a book. At the end of the day, you have put yourself in a unique position. You can easily do all the projects this way. The biggest reason for not setting long goals is the need to spend time to accomplish the tasks. If you plan your day like a big project and plan hours to go around and write a couple of short articles so that you can write your first article, you will do well. It’s up to you whether to end up there or not.
I was very excited when I had this opportunity to talk to me before my next post. I wanted to talk about my experience as a project developer. There are so many big projects I have that just don’t exist in our lives.
