Bound Labor: Slavery
I have always been appalled how cruel people were back when slavery was in effect. After reading Bound Labor: Slavery, I got to see a more vast understanding of these peoples lives. These slaves were whipped, slashed, branded like animals, and even executed for punishments. They were punished for not doing there work correctly, for trying to run free, and even simply for the way they looked. I wouldnt blame them for trying to runaway, because they were being kept against there will. No one should ever have to be kept someone against there will unless they have committed a crime and are in jail. An even person who associated with a person who was Negro was punished. For example Hugh Davis was to be whipped in front of an assembly of Negros on September 17th, 1630, for simply laying with a Negro. People can not help who they are attracted to or have feelings for. I think it is completely ridiculous to be punished for something like this. To make matters worse he was said to be dishonoring god. And I believe that god put everyone on this earth for a reason. God loves everyone no matter what color your skin is or else he would have never created you. Also the masters of some of these black women would sometimes rape them. So I guess it was ok to try and fornicate with a Negro behind there will but not if they were both willing. This makes me completely sick to my stomach. After reading I can relate the poor discrimination and treatment of the black society to the readings of Mrs. Anne Hutchinson who was banned from her colony just for her beliefs. Both dealt with discrimination. As you can see the 17th century was really messed up and there were a lot of judgmental human beings. But anyways with racism it is hard to decide whether racism in the world today or in the past is or was worse. There is still racism today such as “white power” gangs and what not. And with the things these gangs do such as curb stomping are world really does not seem like it has gotten much better with racism even though we have new laws. The only difference is that back then racism against other skin colors was allowed and today we have rights. One very famous saying is, “All men are created equal.” Yet with this world full of hatred and discrimination many people tend to disregard this.
