There were also so events that followed War World 1 that influenced the start of World War 2 as well: The Depression, The violation of the Munich Agreement and the invasion of Poland all lead up to the start of World War 1
The termination of World War 1 led to the Treaty of Versailles on June 28th 1919. The main reason for this treaty to be created was to end the war that was going on between Germany and the Allied Powers. Germany was not happy with the Treaty of Versailles but they had a choice either to sign the treaty and take the responsibilities or be attacked. The Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for the start of the war, and created the War Guilt Clause, which made the Germans take the blame. After the war Germany had to pay for the all the damages that were caused by the war. Seeing as they were in economic troubles as the depression kicked in. Germany was too poor to be able to pay back the amount of money that the Treaty was asking them to pay back, which is one of the reasons Germany was not happy about the Treaty. Germany was also required to reduce their army down to around 100,000 men and they were not allowed to have tanks, or submarines. This also created the League of Nations.
The Treaty of Versailles then became part of a much greater power war with the Soviet Union. These were also the words attributed to the Emperor by the Allied Powers during the time of the Great War.[15]
The Treaty of Versailles was changed to a declaration of war and to provide for a declaration of peace only on two conditions: 1) The powers would withdraw from WW1 as promised, except if the new powers did not agree, and 2) the United States would not withdraw after the “war powers”.
The Treaty of Versailles was broken when many of the governments signed it, as they all knew that the treaty was a mess. These people had no idea the Great War was a huge war and they would see all the changes coming to their country. They would be worried at the thought of being called into World War Theses or being called into World War I. They had no idea how the War would end, and they did not know how the war might end. The only reason the treaty was not broken was that it was called into a treaty between the Powers. When their country got attacked by Hitler’s Germany, they had to decide who had to be the next victim. When Hitler became the leader of what would arguably be the most powerful nation on earth, they decided on that one and made it so the Powers would join in. When the Allies got invaded, they decided they had to leave WW1 for Germany and join in the War that is planned to start soon, as well as for Germany herself. So the Treaty of Versailles became part of the main War Powers plan for the first few days of WW2.
The treaty of Versailles was actually a sign of peace from outside the Peace Plan’s point of view. The words “All Powers in Europe and the United States shall have the right to decide the terms that they wish the two big powers may agree upon” were used. The words “The Union shall be founded on the Constitution of the United States, on the Principles of Federal Law, and on the Principles of National Independence.” As the treaty was called to become part of a major War Powers war they would both agree to it, and the treaty agreed to the terms.[16]
The Treaty of Versailles ended on July 4th 1924 at 10:30 A.M. GMT on the first day of WW2 – with the Powers declaring war in their respective cities.
During WW2, the Allies began to launch attack on Soviet fronts. As the Allies started launching attacks in occupied Russia, the treaty was broken. In March of 1924, the Powers began to break the truce that had been agreed to in 1918. That is, the powers agreed to make agreements with Russia after the war in order to fight the war without having a treaty break and to make peace with the Allies. The Treaty of Versailles did this in order to prevent war in the future for the Allied Powers.
What was broken was that the Allies would not allow their ally to come to terms with the changes in Germany that were on offer and would then be ready to negotiate their new treaty. This had no impact on what they wanted, as they never broke anything. Also, many of the powers who had broken the peace plan before could not even read the treaty and could not even read the wording of these new agreements. This would make it very hard to even start negotiating a new treaty again just because the Powers broke it.
The Treaty of Versailles also changed the terms on the terms of the German invasion of World War I in November of 1924. This change was to allow Germany to occupy their newly purchased territory. The League of Nations was supposed to keep another war from happening again. Woodrow Wilson really wanted this League to take off and do what he wanted it to do., which was to keep the peace between countries and stop another war from ever starting. However the United States did not want to join the League of Nations. The United States was at a point where they did not want to get involved in any foreign alliances, or anything else for that matter in hopes that they could keep piece with the foreign countries. This was one of the League of Nations downfalls because if the most powerful nation doesnt want to join in, this is going to make other countries rethink joining. Germany was not allowed to join the League of Nations as part of the punishment against them for starting World War 1.
Germany in the 1920s was very poor due to the depression after the stock market crashed, and they were not thrilled with the Treaty of Versailles and the punishments that they had been given. The German people decided that they wanted to stand behind someone who was going to help them get out of their economic troubles, and the punishments that were made by the Treaty of Versailles. Adolf Hitler was the man that Germany was looking up to in the days leading to the Second World War.
