Essay title: News Review
I decided on this article titled “At two year colleges, student eager but unready.” This article explains that an overwhelming percentage, nearly half of the 14.7 million undergraduate students attending two and four year institutions, don’t receive their sought after degrees, due to deficiency in basic subjects; such as math and English. The article goes on to reiterate the fact that high schools aren’t preparing students for the pressure and expectations college professors have set. Only 21 percent of students are prepared for college level work according to the ACT college entrance exam. The officials on the colleges are standing firm on assessment scores and encouraging these students to take the remedial classes and freshen up on these forgotten subjects. It also states that three quarters of college students aren’t literate enough to handle everyday tasks, such as reading and comprehending a newspaper article, or figuring out basic unit prices at the grocery store. Students are infuriated to learn that after successfully completing high school , that they must take remedial English and math classes at their college. More and more students are dropping out of college and taking lower paying jobs. Most students attending a two year college have other responsibilities, jobs, and families to worry about This crisis in the colleges is causing emotional problems with students and lowering the self-esteem of the students. The article goes on to talk about methods being implemented in colleges to “get the students attention” using more life based issues to teach the students.Some professors are using television documentaries and having more in class “real life discussions”. The article concludes with saying that the students that do take the remedial classes and finish their degree are happy that they did so and seem more confident.
This article really grabbed my attention, because I myself am currently enrolled in a basic math and English class. I was at first a little upset, believing that my abilities
