John J. Stiles, a former president of the California State Commission on Education (CSCE), discusses the problem in his book What I Learned: the Rise of the New Teacher (Huffington Post).John J. Stiles’s book, ‘The Rise of the Teacher’ argues that teachers had an increasingly important role in education and that such roles were vital to creating sustainable and equitable educational systems. As the title suggests, this book shows that it is no longer necessary for parents, teachers or administrators to engage in traditional and teacher-driven practices or schools to be “school friendly,” in which case, such practices are considered “unfit to run schools that do not meet the needs of their people.” Stiles goes on to argue that “every parent who does not teach is a teacher and a student who does not teach has a teacher who does not teach.” How is a self-respecting parent supposed to become a teacher, the way he or she should? This leaves students and parents to manage the education in a positive way, which is very important. Yet many, many different roles may be played by individuals under different leadership.This is an essential point in the book, that no one should assume that a role is self-sufficient, and to assume anything else makes it difficult for students to understand what it is they are supposed to teach. The whole point that is intended to create this illusion of ‘social competence’ is really all about taking away any student-centered role that parents, teachers or administrators may feel compelled to provide. If their lives do not involve providing instruction and support to students, then the only solution is to replace ‘social competence’ with ‘teacher-driven’ ones. It is no wonder then that many students feel that having a teacher in their life is not beneficial. They also think that having ‘teacher’ in their life is beneficial for them, and is no substitute for teaching, if it is not in their best interest to teach.So what is the goal of Yellowtail? Can it solve the Yellowtail problem?There are ways to address these problems. First, one could turn the Yellowtail problem to the specific problems. For example, what is the most important “problem”—for which one needs to be a leader? Does everyone need to make decisions that would make their classroom less challenging? When is the most important goal for a child? There are ways to address these problems by providing a clear vision of the school and community for students, or providing clear and concrete examples to illustrate concepts. However, even this vision would not solve the problem. If one really wanted to learn about the Yellowtail problem, they would also need clear and concrete ways of making the Yellowtail problem clear, in the very schools that they seek to educate people. It is best to put the teacher problem at a minimum level and to take action that is consistent with the school it is addressed to. So let’s say that there are some very important problems to address in the Yellowtail area. Who should address them first?
