Students Should Not Be Allowed a Facebook Account
“Should young children be allowed to own a facebook account?’’ This is the question which parents are batting around. Young children are those who are 6-12 years old. Currently, Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account, which in other words doesn’t allow young children to own a Facebook account. Some supported what facebook did while some disagreed. In my opinion, young people should not be allowed a facebook account.
Young children lacks the sense of protecting their personal information. As an adult or a teenager, we will not post too much personal information on facebook as we are concerned about our privacy. Contradictory , young children might post most of their personal information to the internet as most don’t know the importance of their information. Moreover, privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart posted a report that warns the personal information of facebook members may be at risk. She also stated that facebook breaches federal privacy law by keeping users’ personal information indefinitely , even after members closed their accounts. Since this is true, young children should definitely not be allowed a facebook account.
Cyber bullying is just a whole another topic about facebook. Facebook provides a platform which allows people to form groups and discuss different topics. However, according to the KidSafe Foundation, many people use this platform to cyber bully other people. The bully can upload photos of that person and gossip about that person with other people. Without a doubt, this will lead to depression for that person. In fact, there were many people who committed suicide because of bullying shown by the news report. Although some might say that many people are mature and will not be bothered by cyber bullying, young children, especially those who are 6-12 years old, will be affected as they are young.
